How to use Instagram hashtags correctly
In this article, we are going to teach you about how you can use Instagram hashtags correctly.
No matter how big or small your audience is, using Instagram hashtags is key when wanting to be discovered by a new audience. Firstly let’s look at what a hashtag really is. According to the oxford dictionary:
‘A word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#), used on social media websites and applications, especially Twitter, to identify messages on a specific topic.’
A hashtag on Instagram is a keyword which can describe what your content is. Using a hashtag will then put your content in front of the users who are interested in what you are posting about. In our agency, clients who use six or seven hashtags see 2x more engagement than those who don’t.
Finding the right hashtags
If you’re new to using Instagram hashtags, then it can sometimes be difficult to identify which ones are best for you. With any client, we recommend them taking the following steps:
- Find 3-5 users on Instagram who have a very similar audience to you. These users can either be bigger or smaller than you. Take a look at the hashtags that each user has on their content, write them down and find out which ones are popular between the users that you have selected. We recommend picking hashtags which relate to what you do. Save at least six of these hashtags as these will be used in your future posts from now on.
- Find another six hashtags which are related to the content/image that you are going to post. The best thing to do is to simply write down some keywords that describe what’s in your image or what you are doing.
- Enter each keyword into Instagram, and take a look at what hashtags show up that are related to the keyword. You wan’t to select a hashtag that’s popular and regularly has users posting content with the hashtag.
- Now you have a good set of hashtags for your content! We always recommend using the same six hashtags in every post and then adding another five or six which are related to the content that you are posting.
Using hashtags without showing them in your content
Instead of posting hashtags in your post, you can actually post your hashtags as the first comment on your content. This will still see your content rank with the hashtags that you use. Simply create a comment as soon as you post with the following format:
You must use the four vertical dots for this to work. You will then see your content rank in hashtags without having to enter them directly into the post.
If you also have Instagram for business, then you will be able to track the effect of using hashtags through the tool.
